About Me

Hello, I’m Emily!

WRITER. TEACHER. SPEAKER.

You’re very welcome here, and I’m so glad you stopped by my home on the internet.  If we were meeting in person, I’d bring you right into my kitchen and ply you with food and drinks. (Both of my grandmothers were Southern and always had loads of food and drinks on hand, and I try hard to follow in their footsteps.) Once we were settled, I’d ask you a bunch of questions and try to get to know the real you. I don’t really enjoy small talk but can go for hours on the big stuff.

Since we can’t meet in person right now, I’ll jump right in and introduce myself. First off, the basics: I’m Emily—Christian, late 40s, single, and living on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.  I spend my days working for a non-profit as the Director of Operations, and in my free time you can find me reading, walking around the neighborhood with friends, and traveling any chance I can get. I’ve been actively involved in my church for 18 years, and it is a huge gift of God’s grace to me. I’ve learned so much in my time there, and its helped mold me into the woman I am today.

A lifetime of unexpected and unwanted singleness has given me a lot of thoughts on the topic.  I’ve been working on a book on singleness for several years, and plan to flush out the idea more fully in this space. I look forward to talking with you and hearing your ideas as I attempt to bring this book project to completion in the next two years. (By putting two years out here, I’m hoping the accountability will keep me on track. Will this work? Stick around to find out.)

Singleness is a big part of my life, but it’s certainly not the only part, and there are a lot of other things to talk about. I love books, fashion, food, travel, movies, funny cat videos, and so much more. You can expect a mix of fun, faith, and friendship. Imagine this space as an ongoing conversation between friends. And no matter how long you’ve been away, we’ll always have a seat at the table just for you.

Welcome to the Ink.

Cheers,

Emily

Get to know me

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS…

  1. I moved to Guam for a teaching job right after college and ended up staying for five and half years. It was a phenomenal adventure, and I loved it. I still have friends who live there and it will always hold a very special place in my heart. Hafa Adai to my fellow Guamanians!
  2. I have a deep and abiding love for stationery and writing instruments in general, and good old-fashioned wooden pencils in particular. The Ticonderoga #2 is my favorite, but the Blackwing 602 also makes me really happy. I’m only slightly embarrassed to say I probably have at least 200+ stashed all over my apartment.
  3. I am an unofficial ambassador for Hallmark Channel. I take a lot of pride in converting former skeptics into Hallmark movie enthusiasts. I love the predictable plots, feel-good stories, and yes, ALL the Christmas movies.
  4. I hate moving. I move a lot. And I mean A LOT. At last count I’ve had 20 different addresses in the past 25 years. I’m actively praying that my forever home isn’t too long in coming, because I don’t think I can handle too many more moves!
  5. Books. All the books. All the time. I’m an avid reader and always have been. My local library is my happy place and I could easily spend hours browsing in a bookstore.
Need a book rec? You’ve come to the right place!
